A friend of ours threw a gingerbread house making party which was a lot of fun.
A lot of the kids’ friends were there, and it was really cool to see all the different families and kids went about building their houses.
We used kits, which were okay except that the houses turned out to be really flimsy. Z got hers mostly done before it collapsed, and which point she was pretty much content just to start nibbling on it.
Alex took his house *really* seriously and made sure it had all kinds of detail, right down to a little mailbox. It was fun to see him get engrossed in something that was essentially an artistic endeavor, as art isn’t usually his thing.
His house was a bit more sturdy, and made it as far as the hairpin turn on the drive home, at which point it pretty much exploded in his lap. think next time I will just use wood glue or something instead of relying on wussy frosting as an adhesive, as it would have been nice to keep it around for a couple of days, even if it would no longer be edible. Fortunately he took it in stride - we talked about a video we had seen a few days earlier of some Tibetan monks making a beautiful mandala (only to sweep it all up when they were done) some things just are just meant to be temporary, and gingerbread definitely falls into that category.
